Remembering the Islander
Book Photo Martha's Vineyard is always saying goodbye. So it seems, at any rate, as you watch each day's ferries sailing away from the Steamship Authority pier, freighted with memories.

In more than thirty years of living here, Daniel Waters has used his poetry to say goodbye to many Island people and things: country newspaper editor Henry Beetle Hough; horticulturist Polly Hill; Vineyard Haven's fabled Linden Tree. There are the seasonal comings and goings that mark the Vineyard calendar: the closing of the Agricultural Fair each fall, the opening of the Dairy Queen each spring, the yearly rapture of the spring peepers in Island bogs. Whether measured in months or decades, cycles both momentous and quotidian are pressed between the covers of this book.

"Mr. Waters, the poet laureate of West Tisbury, has done a wonderful job of capturing life as it is experienced by mostly unsung Vineyarders, of the particular and occasionally peculiar moments that are part of the shared fabric of Island life. He writes with passion, with humor, with sharp insight. Every word counts. The poems enter the mind easily, but linger once inside. His handsome linoleum-block cuts that illustrate the volume deepen the pleasure." - James Kinsella, Vineyard Gazette
"It is a book to handle, to peruse, to carry along and read in transit or in solitude. In small details, it is an often witty, often poignant tribute to the frustrations and delights that recognize Island life, and those things that make living here a privilege." - C.K. Wolfson, Martha's Vineyard Times
