Remembering the Islander
Photo of Print
In spring of 2007, after more than fifty years of service, the Islander was retired as the Vineyard's favorite ferry to the mainland. Mobs of people crowded aboard for her last voyage, and there were many tearful goodbyes. This linoleum-block print was made to illustrate a long elegiac poem I wrote to celebrate the boat and her role as our connection to the rest of the world. The poem and picture were given the entire front page of the Vineyard Gazette on Memorial Day weekend. In this print, I've tried to capture not only the thrill of adventure that infuses a ferry trip across the open ocean, but the sense of isolation that comes with living on an island seven miles at sea.
